Kenai Fjords National Park
Where Mountains, Ice, and Ocean Meet
At the edge of the Kenai Peninsula lies a land where the ice age lingers. Nearly 40 glaciers flow from the Harding Icefield, Kenai Fjords’ crowning feature. Wildlife thrives in icy waters and lush forests along the fjords once carved by the vast expanse of ice. Today, shrinking glaciers bear witness to the effects of our changing climate.
After visiting Katmai National Park to see Bears, we decided to go to Kennai peninsula. We had not realized that we would have to go back to Anchorage. Any way we had return Airline tickets.
After reaching Anchorage we went to catch the bus at Bus station in the city for about 4 hours ride to reach Seaward.
Here also we had opted for a home stay. Seaward is a big port and we didn’t know how to get to our home stay, as it was all upslope. The gentleman asked us to hire a Rickshaw to reach there. It was a very nice house. We were to use the ground floor with a seat out.
The view of the port from there was beautiful with lots of yachts anchored and giant cruise ships. We spent that day relaxing in the house.
Next day we took 6 Hour long Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise to explore beautiful glaciers, birds, sea lions, otters, and more whales, wildlife, and glaciers found in Kenai Fjords National Park. The boat took us right in front of the mighty majestic Holgate Glacier and saw chunks of glaciers break off and crash into the water. The scene was majestic and saw calving glaciers from close distance. On way back the ship took us around to explore the innumerable islands and coves of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, home to thousands of nesting seabirds including puffins, common murres, and blacklegged kittiwakes. This cruise is the best option for those who are interested in seeing an active calving glacier along with all the wildlife in the Kenai Fjords National Park. This was a great opportunity to take photographs up close. On cliffs we saw black clonies of Puffins, that are also called Penguins of north.
